Following security dogs has taken me to many places beyond Amsterdam. Detection dogs in particular are often used to police flows—mostly of migrants and drugs—which span regional and national boundaries. This has made me realize that security is a trans-scalar project, one which has implications for everyday life in cities but takes place in geographically dispersed locations: shipping containers in harbors, trucks in highways, and dog training centers that are often located in rural areas. Coming from an urban background, this has been a challenge. However, this experience has also been exciting and enriching, as it has pushed me to think of the city beyond its territorial boundaries.
